What is actually backing up?

One sink or one tub, everything else fine

A single fixture draining slowly is almost always a branch line, the short pipe between that fixture and the main. Grease, hair and soap build up on the pipe wall until the opening is the width of a pencil. It is the smallest job on this list.

Toilet bubbles when the washer drains

Two fixtures talking to each other means the blockage is downstream of both, so it is the main line rather than a branch. Air has nowhere to go and comes up through the nearest water seal. Worth ringing today rather than at the weekend.

Whole house is slow, or water is coming up somewhere

When everything is affected at once the main sewer line is blocked and the house has nowhere to drain. Stop running water, including the dishwasher and the washing machine, and ring straight away. Every gallon that goes down has to come back up somewhere.

    You hear what it costs and when we can be there before a truck moves. We keep a tight schedule so the job gets done properly, so we will tell you honestly if it is tomorrow.

  3. Step three

    Cleared at the source

    Kitchen and bath drains, tubs, showers, laundry lines, floor and yard drains, and main sewer lines. Cleared where the blockage actually is, not poked at from the nearest opening.

  4. Step four

    You get told what caused it

    Roots, grease, a belly in the line, or something that should never have gone down there. If it is going to come back, you hear that too, along with what it would take to fix properly.

Sixteen years of drains means there is not much left that we have not seen come out of a pipe. We show up, find the actual problem, and clear it. No upsell theatre, no while we are here sales pitch, no quote that changes once the van is in the driveway.

We are a local SE Portland operation on Stark Street, not a franchise truck dispatched from a call centre three states away. When you ring, you are talking to the people who do the work, and the price you hear is the price.

The next ten minutes

Four things worth doing between hanging up and the truck arriving. They cost nothing and they occasionally save a floor.

Stop putting water in
No dishwasher, no washing machine, no long showers, and go easy on the toilets. If the line is blocked, everything that goes down is looking for somewhere to come back up, and that is usually the lowest drain in the house.
Move what you would hate to lose
Boxes off the basement floor, rugs rolled back, anything electrical up off the ground near a floor drain. Ten minutes here is worth more than anything we can do once it has already spread.
Find the cleanout if you can
A capped pipe sticking up outside, often near the foundation or by the front kerb. If you know where it is, say so on the phone. If you have no idea, that is completely normal and we will locate it.
Leave the chemicals alone
Caustic drain opener sitting on top of a solid blockage does not clear it. It sits there, and it is still there when somebody has to open the line by hand. If you have already poured some in, just tell us, nobody is going to be annoyed.
